Washing the Dog!!
Random post but one that I could have done with reading!
I've had my black raccoon faux fur collar for a few months now and am embarrassed to say that yesterday was the first time I washed it due to laziness (and fear).
My ebay purchase didn't have any washing instructions and I couldn't even really depend on help from google because I didn't know for sure what it was made from.
But it got to the point where I would either have to wash it or buy a new one so I did some basic research about faux fur and decided to hand wash mine using Woolite (I use this to wash my merino wool cardigans too fyi).
I just ran some warm water into my sink and used a generous amount of Woolite (the pink one btw) and then swished black raccoon and all black (didn't need it but thought I might as well) in the sink and gently rubbed the fur (basically the same as I imagine you would do washing a pet)
The water was absolutely flithy! I was going to post a pic but it was kinda nasty :s
So after a few minutes I dumped both collars into my bath and used the shower head to rinse. Again I gently rubbed the fur but I wasn't too rough as I didn't want to lose any fur (the black shed like 3 hairs in the sink, black raccoon was fine!). Once water was running clear for a while I gently squeezed out excess water. I then set up a clothes horse in my bath and let it drip dry for....an hour? A bit more?
Collars were still soaking wet after an hour but you could see the fur starting to become matt and horribe so I gently wrung out the water and then set up a clothes horse in my living room (so that I could watch tv haha) and then I used my blow dryer.
I couldn't blow dry it completely dry because to be honest it was boring and time consuming. So I did both until the hair was looking more normal and then let them air dry.
This morning they are dry and clean, ready to rock and roll :)
