So I've mentioned before about dressing tables and clothes rails and the like. So I thought I'd put my thoughts on 'paper' and try to come to a plan that I can then work towards (and share my progress with you)and make reality .
My bedroom at the moment:
Erm, messy!!
But basically my bedroom is really a dressing room with a bed in it. And I like it like that. I like being surrounded by the frivolous stuff that I work hard to buy.
I'm trying to keep it low key because my bedroom at my parents house was crazy. CRAZY. It was hot pink and there was stuff everywhere. It looked like hello kitty and barbie had a lesbian affair and then got into a cat fight and threw each others crap around the room! And I LOVED it.
Going for a different look now though since I'm all grown up and stuff ;) Big white bed, white walls, cream(ish) carpet.
Depending on my mood it's either like being in heaven or a mental institution. But whether blissful or crazy its def much calmer than hot pink.
So apart from my bed, I've got a built in wardrobe with single rail and shelf, and this is where I have my clothes, bags and most of my shoes. On the shelf I store boxes and general junk (I could probably make more use of the space...)
I then have a freestanding wardrobe which I use to store my coats and jackets. It also has two drawers that I store my nighties and 'home clothes' in. On top of the wardrobe I have my patent croc trolley suitcase.
I have a chest of drawers which I use as a vanity. Top drawer is beauty stuff and the other 3 drawers are random tops I don't really wear.
I have a pink clothes rail (soon to be replaced with a black/silver one) which I store the clothes I'm wearing that week. Some people find it weird having clothes out like that, but tbh i've never even closed the door to the built in wardrobe so it doesn't make a difference to me. I like being able to see all my stuff. And it's not there long enough to gather dust...and if it's dusty I just give it a shake ;) lol
I then have bedside table next to my bed, and two bookshelves. And then I have the 4 big drawers that are part of my bed, I store all my bed linen, kitchen towels, towels, and then I have a drawer I call "Superdrugs" and it's where I keep all the beauty stuff I'm hoarding (as you know, I like to bulk buy); I get this habit from my mum because she does this too. So if I ever run out of toothpaste, shampoo, bodywash etc I just have a peek in the drawer before I go to the shops.
I do not have any electrical entertainment stuff in my room (apart form my music thing which isn't even plugged in so that doesnt count!). Though there are times when I wish I did have a tv in there (I;ve been really ill this week and I really thought I'd die of boredom if not the sickness :() I do like my room as a sancturary.
I digress....so even though in an ideal world I don't want any more furniture in my room because for me, furniture equals junk, I need a dressing table. Technically space is not a probably, but it might look a bit squeezed in my room, I might need to lose weight otherwise I won't fit!!!!
But part of me thinks that getting a dressing table will create more mess because tbh I need more than an extra surface and two tiny drawers. I need a hardcore vanity unit. A room . A suite!! You know how it is, the more space you get, the more junk you accumalate.
And dressing tables are not cheap. This cannot be a passing whim. And desks (cos what is a dressing table but a desk with a mirror?!) are a sore point with me and my mum. I was desk obsessed when living at home. And I never ever used the 1235356 that I made my parents buy. I don't like the idea of being at a desk. I did my studying on the floor, or on my bed. Even when I am in my office I work at another desk (unless I'm using my computer obviously). And currently when I get ready I trail my junk from the bathroom, to bedroom, to hallway, to bedroom, to bathroom, to living room, to bedroom. Will I really sit on a fancy padded stool and do my hair and make up there? Cos if I don't.......*sighs*
Ok, dressing table tirade aside, I also want a better storage system for my shoes and I'm thinking:
A million clear shoe boxes. I'm over the polaroid on shoe boxes thing ( I didn't polaroid, I just wrote descriptions on post it notes and stuck it to the box, worked perfect!). Primark shoes don't come with shoe boxes, so this solution could work. It's about £55 for 50 boxes though....or £40 for 30 normal boxes and then I'd need a few boot boxes which are approx £35 for 10. This does not work out to be a cheap solution. It wasn't planned and I'm not sticking to it rigidly (obviously) but I'm trying to clear out my shoes by wearing them to death and binning them. cos I am a hoarder. Even when the heed falls off and I buy a new pair I keep the old pair 'just in case' Just in case what?! I'd be better off bare foot in the snow then hanging on to some of the crap I won't chuck out lol
If I could store my shoes like that (I'm thinking in a massive pile) then I'm ok for handbag storage, cos I store them in a massive box (ikea) and a giant mountain on the box in my built-in wardrobe (which is small but really deep). OR I could store all the shoe bozes in that space and put my bags somewhere else......nah. I'm stuck with those giant ikea storage containers and they are best where they are.
But one thing I do really really want, and have done for a looooong time, is a coat rack (or a coat tree) to hand my most used handbags on.
Summary? F*ck.
So.....
How and where do you get ready? Do you have a fancy dressing table? How do you store your shoes and handbags?
PS: Life is good when this is one of my biggest worries at the moment. I is grateful!
